Globo rights renewal takes Copa do Brasil to new level

Brazilian media company Globo has renewed a rights deal for the Copa do Brasil domestic knockout football competition.

The new deal will run for five years, from 2018 to 2022.

The exclusive agreement covers all media platforms, with Globo sublicensing on pay-television rights to pay-television broadcaster SporTV. The Globoesporte.com website will also stream coverage of the tournament.

The agreement is worth R300m (€86m/$89m) per year.

According to various reports, the rights deal has made the competition the most lucrative in Latin American club football, with the winner set to receive prize money of R68.7m – considerably more than the R17m secured by the champion of the domestic league and R7.3m received by the winner of the pan-continental Copa Libertadores.
