Televisa and América Movil will be prohibited from acquiring exclusive media rights for certain sporting events by the Mexican government’s Federal Telecommunications Institute, which has also ordered the media companies to share their infrastructure with competitors.
The institute’s new measures will be introduced in a bid to reduce the dominance of the nation’s two dominant media companies, the Bloomberg news agency said.
The institute told Televisa that it would be blocked from acquiring exclusive domestic rights for programming that has “unique characteristics that in the past have delivered high audiences,” such as Fifa World Cup football matches, the company said.
América Movil added that it would not be allowed to secure exclusive rights for similar content, including certain national football matches.
América Movil must also share parts of its network, the company said.
