L’Équipe posted record audience figures on Monday evening as its coverage of the Ballon d’Or ceremony attracted an average viewership of almost 2 million people in France.

The numbers were boosted by France and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema winning the award for the first time in his career. Benzema, who won the Uefa Champions League with Real Madrid last season, claimed the award ahead of Sadio Mané and Kevin De Bruyne.
