LFP asks government to accelerate introduction of new rights legislation

The Spanish Football League (LFP) has written to the country’s government to ask for the implementation of legislation that will enable the introduction of a collective media-rights sales model “as soon as possible.”

LFP president Javier Tebas said that the letter had been sent after 40 out of 41 clubs voted for the change at the league’s extraordinary assembly.

The only club to vote against the move was Athletic Bilbao, with Real Madrid joining Barcelona in agreeing to the proposal. Real and Barcelona will receive no more than four times as much media-rights income as the lowest-paid team in the top-tier Liga. The two clubs currently receive almost 6.5 times more than the smallest of the division’s 20 teams.

The league was hoping the change would be implemented in time to begin with the 2016-17 season, but the assembly was convened after clubs expressed frustrations about delays in the process.
