Spanish telco Movistar has announced the closure of its esports channel two years after its launch.
According to the Esports Observer news website, the reason for the closure is a recent deal that will allow Netflix to be integrated into Movistar’s platform, leading to a shake-up of the telco’s channel offering.
Movistar eSports content will still be available on demand or across other Movistar platforms, including the #Vamos sports channel.
Movistar, which operates in Latin America as well as Spain, established an esports team, the Movistar Riders, to coincide with the launch of the channel and then proceeded to open an esports centre in Madrid. There is no suggestion that the esports team will be discontinued.
The company also recently sponsored the European League of Legends Championship Series Finals in Madrid.
