NBC Universo to broadcast PGA Tour’s Mexican tournament

NBC Universo, the Spanish-language sports and entertainment cable channel of US media company NBCUniversal, will broadcast live coverage of this year’s OHL Classic at Mayakoba, the only Mexican-based event on golf’s PGA Tour.

NBC Universo will broadcast live the third and final rounds of the event, which will take place at the El Camaleón Golf Club in Quintana Roo, on November 14-15.

The decision to add a Spanish-language broadcast of the event serves as a preliminary step toward Spanish-language golf content as part of NBC Sports’ coverage of the Open Championship and Women’s British Open, which will be broadcast by NBC Sports for the first time in 2016.

The weekend broadcasts of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba on NBC Universo also mark an effort to expand the network’s engagement with Hispanic audiences to showcase the game to a broader audience of golf fans.

NBC Sports last month struck a deal to assume coverage in the US of the Open Championship from the 2016 edition of the British event – a year earlier than planned.

In June, NBC Sports secured rights for the event for 12 years, from 2017 to 2028, in a deal with tournament operator the R&A.

NBC Sports then brokered a deal with pay-television broadcaster ESPN, which was due to show the 2016 tournament, as well as the R&A, to begin its coverage one year earlier.

Coverage of the Open is due to be shown on the NBC network and NBC Sports Group broadcasters Golf Channel and NBC Universo in English and Spanish, respectively.
