A meeting scheduled to discuss a new media-rights distribution model for English Premier League football clubs was adjourned yesterday (Wednesday) without an agreement having been reached.
A proposal presented by the league’s executive chairman, Richard Scudamore, suggested that 35 per cent of the global rights revenue should be divided between the clubs based on their final league position. Currently the rights income is split equally between the 20 clubs, but the six richest clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur – are reportedly pushing for a larger share.
UK public-service broadcaster the BBC reported that no vote was taken on the proposal due to a lack of support. Fourteen of the clubs would need to back the proposal for it to be adopted, but the report added that it became clear during the meeting that the plan was significantly short of the required support threshold.
The topic will be on the agenda again at the next meeting of the league’s chairmen in November.
