International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has said that revenue from broadcast rights for the 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games is expected to exceed $4 billion (€3.28 billion).
“For the period 2014-16 we already have $3.6 billion and it should reach and exceed $4 billion,” he said, according to the Reuters news agency.
The IOC has secured $3.9 billion from broadcast rights for the cycle comprising Vancouver’s 2010 winter Olympics and London’s forthcoming summer Games.
Rogge said that the IOC had already generated $2.6 billion in broadcast rights for PyeongChang’s 2018 Winter Olympic Games and the yet-to-be assigned 2020 summer Games.
He said that television rights fees had experienced significant growth since 2001, increasing from $2.2 billion for the period 2002-04.
“The financial situation is strong and safe,” Rogge said. “Since December 31, 2001, our reserves have grown from $105 million to $558 million, an increase of $453 million. This financial solidity is due to the success of marketing and broadcast rights.”
