South African public-service broadcaster SABC has agreed a partnership with telecommunications company Telkom under which the two parties will join forces in efforts to acquire sports rights, according to the Channel24 website.
The SABC said that the partnership meant that the two companies would use their infrastructure jointly and explore partnering in projects including sports. Channel24 added that these projects would include sports rights acquisitions.
The SABC’s acting chief operating officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, said that hundreds of millions of rand have been set aside for the project.
Under the terms of the deal, Telkom will also upgrade SABC’s technology infrastructure, while additionally the two firms will work together to bring SABC content to viewers on mobile devices.
