Sanz leaves Traffic for key Concacaf post

Enrique Sanz will leave his position as vice president of the Traffic Sports USA agency to become the new general secretary of Concacaf, the governing body of football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Sanz will succeed acting general secretary Ted Howard, who has been in the interim role since January following the resignation of Chuck Blazer. Blazer had served in the post since 1990. He announced his intention to step down last October after his bribery accusations against former Concacaf president Jack Warner and Asian Football Confederation president Mohamed bin Hammam triggered the anti-corruption investigations at Fifa, world football’s governing body.

Colombian-born Sanz has headed operations for Traffic in the Concacaf region since 2005. During this time, he was part of the team that relaunched the North American Soccer League in the US in 2011. He will take up his new position on July 25.

Sanz said: “Although not without challenge, I foresee a great new era for the confederation. With this appointment, and as part of Concacaf’s new leadership, I understand that my mandate is to oversee the administration of the Concacaf, so that we may achieve our mission, which is to develop football throughout the region.”
