Australian public-service broadcaster SBS has acquired rights to the upcoming season of the National Basketball League domestic club competition.
SBS will hold exclusive free-to-air broadcast rights in the country for the league’s 2016-17 campaign, which begins next month.
SBS will broadcast one game live each Sunday through its SBS and SBS HD channels. Coverage will also be streamed online.
“Our goal is to reach as many Australian basketball fans as possible through our coverage and showcase the quality of the NBL to Australian audiences,” NBL executive director Larry Kestelman said. “Having a free-to-air broadcaster that also loves and understands the business of televising sport is of huge importance to us as we continue to grow the sport.”
The 2016-17 NBL season gets underway on October 6, with the Brisbane Bullets hosting defending champion Perth Wildcats. The first game to be broadcast by SBS will be Melbourne United’s clash with the Adelaide 36ers on October 9.
