German pay-television broadcaster Sky Deutschland has confirmed that it will show matches from the country’s Bundesliga football top tier and the Uefa Champions League in ultra-high-definition this season.
The coverage will be spread across two channels, with Sky Sport Bundesliga UHD showing one game per Bundesliga match day in ultra-high-definition and Sky Sport UHD offering selected Champions League games in the format.
Other live sports will be made available in the format in due course, with all Sky subscribers who are signed up for the premium HD package able to access the coverage for free for 12 months.
To enable the coverage, Sky will launch its UHD-capable receiver Sky+ Pro in the final quarter of this year.
The German Football League (DFL) said that there had also been “early expressions of interest in the UHD content from the Bundesliga’s international TV partners.”
The DFL added: “The planned launch to market of Bundesliga transmissions in high-resolution UHD was preceded by an intensive test phase in collaboration with the DFL subsidiary Sportcast and with Sky.”
