Mexican beer brand Tecate is offering a reduced pay-per-view television price in the United States for customers buying the boxing world title fight between pound-for-pound superstars Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, through its sponsorship of the bout.
Last month, Tecate pipped rival brand Corona to a main sponsor slot for Mayweather v Pacquiao, which takes place in Las Vegas on May 2, thanks to a bid of $5.6m (€5.1m).
US cable television broadcasters HBO and Showtime this month said the suggested retail price for the pay-per-view will be $89.95, although many customers will end up paying $99.95 due to a surcharge for high definition added at the discretion of cable and satellite providers.
Tecate, a long-time sponsor of Pacquiao bouts, is offering fans who purchase its beer a rebate of up to $50 on their Mayweather-Pacquiao pay-per-view purchases. Customers can save $15 with the purchase of one Tecate or Tecate Light 18-pack, $30 with the purchase of two 18-packs, or $50 with the purchase of three. The offer will be made through the issue of 675,000 mail-in rebate forms.
“We know consumers react well to the mail-in rebates,” Tecate brand director Gustavo Guerra told ESPN.com. “And now here's a fight where the pay-per-view is going to be $100. It is expensive, and this will be very attractive for consumers.”
Tecate primarily retails in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas and the mail-in rebate forms are expected to be available at point-of-sale.
