Sponsors fund Nation’s Cup coverage in Botswana

A trio of broadcast sponsorship deals helped to raise the rights fee required by public-service broadcaster Botswana TV for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, which is currently taking place in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

The Rapid TV News website reports that the Botswana Life insurance company, mining business Debswana and telco Orange Botswana pledged a total of BWP1.85 million (€191,000 / $243,000) towards the BWP5.06 million rights fee. Orange is a major sponsor of the Confederation of African Football, the governing body of football in Africa, and holds the mobile rights to Caf events in 55 African countries. Debswana agreed to pay BWP750,000, while Botswana Life provided BWP350,000.

Botswana TV reportedly acquired the rights in a deal with Afnex, a France-based company providing satellite broadcast and other services in Africa.

Botswana TV will broadcast every game of the tournament, with 28 of the 32 matches shown live and the other four being delayed broadcasts.
