German sports broadcaster Sport1 has submitted a bid for the rights to the 2015 men’s handball World Championships, according to sports marketing magazine Sponsors.
Sport1 would exploit the rights on pay-television channel Sport1 Plus and the Sport1.de website.
Sport1 does not expect to learn whether it has secured the rights until January, the report added.
There have been fears that the event, which is due to run from January 15 to February 1 in Qatar, will not be shown on German television after public-service broadcasters ARD and ZDF pulled out of talks to acquire the rights earlier this month.
Last month, Sport1 acquired rights for the Germany national men's and women's handball teams' away qualifying matches for the 2016 and 2018 European Handball Federation European Championships.
In other news, Sport1 has launched a new video application, Sport1 Video App, which will allow viewers to access the broadcaster’s free-to-air channel as well as on-demand programmes.
The app is initially available on Android mobile devices, with availability on Apple iOS platforms to be announced at a later date.
