German sports broadcaster Sportdigital is considering launching a US sports-dedicated television channel, according to the Digital Fernsehen news website.
Sportdigital chief executive Gisbert Wundram confirmed a licence application was filed on May 21 to launch the channel, which is currently under the working name of Sportamerica HD.
The news has emerged as ESPN’s US sport channel ESPN America prepares to cease transmission in the country on July 31.
In March, ESPN sent a letter to distributors saying that broadcasts of ESPN America, which is distributed on pay-television platforms across Europe, and the archive channel ESPN Classic, would end on this date.
