Indian pay-television broadcaster Star Sports has launched a new Tamil-language channel.
Star Sports Tamil went live on May 28 and is now available across the country, including in the state of Tamil Nadu.
The channel will broadcast coverage of various major sporting events such as the Tamil Nadu Premier League Twenty20 club cricket competition, the Pro Kabaddi League, football’s Indian Super League and the forthcoming Champions Trophy national team cricket tournament.
Star Sports Tamil will also show curated Tamil content localised to Tamil sports stars, such as Indian national team cricket players Ravichandran Ashwin and MS Dhoni (pictured). Dhoni is a Star Sports ambassador and will feature in a promotional campaign for the new channel.
A Star India spokesperson told the IndianTelevision website: “Tamil Nadu is a unique market with high affinity to language content and very distinctive viewing habits. Star Sports Tamil is an extension of our belief to give people more relevant regional sports content and celebrate the ‘Tamizh’ culture. This is another resolute step in our constant endeavour to bring fans closer to sports.”
