US network CBS’s live coverage of the NFL’s American football Super Bowl game on Sunday attracted an average of 108.4 million viewers in the country, according to audience measurement company Nielsen.
It was the third largest audience for a programme in US television history, behind the Super Bowl in 2012, which attracted 111.3 million viewers, and the Super Bowl in 2011, which attracted 111 million viewers.
In Canada, the game attracted an average combined audience of 7.33 million viewers to Canadian cable-television broadcaster CTV and pay-television sports broadcaster TSN, which both provided live coverage of the contest between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers.
It was the second largest audience for an NFL game in Canadian television history, behind last year’s game, which attracted 8.2 million viewers, according to audience measurement company BBM Canada.
The Ravens won the game 34-31 after a power outage at the stadium in New Orleans brought play to a halt for 35 minutes in the third quarter.
