Real Madrid and Barcelona will have their media rights income capped at four times as much as the Spanish top-tier Liga’s smallest club, according to Javier Tebas, the president of the Liga de Fútbol Profesional, the Spanish football league.
The Bloomberg news agency said that Real and Barcelona, which currently earn about 6.5 times as much as the smallest of the Liga’s 20 clubs, would have their rights income limited by legislation that is expected to be introduced in Spain later this year.
Atlético Madrid chief executive Angel Gil said that, under the proposed new ‘Sports Law,’ Real and Barcelona’s media rights income would remain at about €150m ($222m) each “for a few years” while the other clubs catch up, the report added.
Tebas said last year that Real and Barcelona each receive €136m per year, and would “not see a decrease” under the proposed new arrangement.
