Spanish public-service broadcaster TVE has signed a three-year extension to its broadcast rights deal for the Vuelta a España, in an agreement which covers the 2014, 2015 and 2016 editions of the cycle race.
TVE has agreed the new deal with Vuelta organiser Unipublic. The ABC newspaper said the contract has been signed with a “substantial” cost saving of 25-per-cent versus the previous deal to “adapt to the characteristics” of the current major sports events market.
TVE will broadcast the 2013 Vuelta, which runs from August 24 to September 15, via its digital-terrestrial sports channel Teledeporte and TVE-HD. The most important stages of the race may also be broadcast by TVE’s main La 1 channel.
The Vuelta a España is one of cycling’s three ‘Grand Tours’ alongside the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. Spain’s Alberto Contador won the 2012 edition of the race.
