Chinese online streaming company UCWeb has acquired rights in the country for football’s 2018 Fifa World Cup under a sublicensing deal with state broadcaster CCTV.
UCWeb, which is owned by e-commerce company Alibaba, will show short videos of CCTV’s World Cup coverage, including highlights and support programming.
UCWeb is the second Alibaba-owned platform to have struck a deal with CCTV for coverage of the tournament. Last month, video-streaming provider Youku acquired live-streaming rights for all 64 games at the World Cup.
UCWeb already offers coverage of various European football leagues and the NBA North American basketball league.
In China, China Mobile’s MIGU also has streaming rights for the World Cup, while Hisense was granted OTT rights.
