Organisers of the Volvo Ocean Race have brokered a deal for social media platform Twitter to stream live coverage of the remainder of the 2017-18 campaign.
Twitter will show the eight remaining in-port sailing races via the race’s official page on the website, beginning in Hong Kong this Saturday.
In addition to the live in-port races, the @volvooceanrace account will also offer supplementary video content from the seven participating boats, as well as expert analysis and highlights.
In May 2015, the Volvo Ocean Race offered live coverage from the race via Periscope, Twitter’s live streaming video app.
The introduction of a groundbreaking crew communicator device means that for the first time in the history of the race, sailors can send tweets live from the boat, even in the most remote regions on Earth – staying connected via satellites. Previously, access to the internet has been prohibited in order to prevent teams receiving information from land.
