YouTube to show Ligue 1 content globally

Video-sharing website YouTube has agreed a global rights deal to show action from Ligue 1, the top-tier French football league.

The deal will run for four seasons, from 2012-13 to 2015-16, and will include highlights of matches, according to French newspaper Les Echos.

“We are the only league in the world to sign such an agreement with YouTube,” an LFP spokesperson told the newspaper.

Google-owned YouTube struck the deal with pay-television broadcaster Al Jazeera, the international media rights-holder for the French football league, the Ligue de Football Professionnel.

In May, the league assigned the video-on-demand rights in France for Ligue 1 to YouTube as well as the Dailymotion.fr and L’Equipe.fr websites. The domestic deals also cover four seasons, from 2012-13 to 2015-16.
