Horse racing: US network NBC acquired the rights for two of US horse racing’s three prestigious Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in a five-year deal from 2006 to 2010. It fought off an aggressive bid from cable broadcaster ESPN for the Preakness Stakes rights. NBC presently covers all three Triple Crown races in a five-year, $51.5m (£27m/€39.9m) deal expiring after 2005. Last year the Disney-owned network ABC acquired the exclusive live rights for the third Triple Crown race, the Belmont Stakes, in a two-year $20m deal starting in 2006. The Belmont Stakes owners, the New York Racing Association, agreed an individual deal after a disagreement in how television revenue should be distributed between the three races.
