Online streaming service Aereo has said that it could operate like a cable-television provider to survive, according to the Bloomberg news agency.
Aereo suspended its operations last month following a ruling by the US Supreme Court that it breached the copyright of major sports leagues and their broadcast partners.
After the court said that Aereo operated much like a cable-television service, the company wrote in a letter to US district court judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan that it should be entitled to pay to licence programming, with its transmissions not infringing upon broadcasters’ rights.
The letter represented a joint statement of the dispute by Aereo and the broadcasters. The CBS network, writing in the same letter, said that Aereo’s bid to reinstate its service should be dismissed.
In a separate statement, Aereo chief executive Chet Kanojia said: “We remain committed to building great technologies that create real, meaningful alternatives for customers.”
