Pay-television broadcaster Al Jazeera, which operates the beIN Media Group, is considering bidding for a free-to-air DTT licence in Spain and attempting to acquire rights for the Liga, the top division of football in the country, according to the Vozpopuli news website.
The report, citing sources, said Al Jazeera is interested in an upcoming bidding process for five new DTT licences.
The process is set to take place in the first half of this year and will feature four high-definition signals and one standard-definition signal.
A possible bid for the Liga rights would coincide with the league shifting to a collective rights-selling model, the report added. Currently clubs are able to negotiate their own broadcast deals.
