Qatari pay-television broadcaster Al Jazeera has acquired rights in France for Spanish Liga football for three seasons, from 2012-13 to 2014-15, according to Le Figaro.
Al Jazeera beat a rival offer from Canal Plus, the incumbent rights-holder, to acquire the rights.
The Qatari broadcaster has outbid Canal Plus to win several key football properties in France in the last seven months, including domestic Ligue 1 and Uefa Champions League football in deals beginning in 2012-13, ahead of its launch of two pay-television channels in the market this year. Last week, the two broadcasters both acquired rights for Italian Serie A and German Bundesliga football in deals covering the 2012-13 to 2014-15 seasons.
The deal for La Liga rights was brokered by the Spanish Mediapro agency.
