Amazon bolsters sports content offering in Germany, Austria

Internet company Amazon has further enhanced the sports content on offer to customers of its Prime subscription service in Austria and Germany through new agreements with sports broadcaster Sport1 and action sports and lifestyle channel Edgesport.

Under the deal with Sport1, the broadcaster’s US sports-focused pay-television channel Sport1 US will be made available via the Prime Video app on smart televisions, mobile iOS and Android devices, Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick and Fire tablets, or online at Amazon.de/channels – for €4.99 ($6) a month with no package or long-term contract commitments.

Sport1 US offers content including NBA basketball, NHL ice hockey, MLB baseball, college American football and basketball from the NCAA and motor-racing series IndyCar.

Matthias Kirschenhofer, managing director of Sport1 Media, said: “The partnership with Amazon is another key component of our strategy to diversify our pay-TV activities.”

Meanwhile, the Broadband TV News website said Edgesport will be made available for €2.99 per month.

Edgesport is operated by the IMG agency and offers international action sports events from the likes of snowboarding, surfing, kite surfing, mountain biking, skateboarding, free skiing, wakeboarding, BMX and motor sports.

The latest deals come after Amazon last month started offering content from international sports broadcaster Eurosport to its Prime subscribers in Germany and Austria.
