Basketball Bundesliga to continue clips experiment on Facebook and Twitter

The Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), the top division of the sport in Germany, has said it will continue to offer near-live clips of games via social media platforms Facebook and Twitter following a successful pilot initiative at the weekend.

The league is carrying out the project in co-operation with its media rights partner, telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom.

Live broadcasts of BBL games at the weekend were accompanied by ‘real time highlights’ clips on the league’s Facebook and Twitter feeds, with a time delay of less than 60 seconds.

The BBL said the initiative will continue for selected top games, with a broader service set to be rolled out for the Top Four cup competition on April 11-12.

BBL managing director Jan Pommer said: “The real time highlights, because of their additional potential reach, are an ideal appetiser and a wonderful addition to our existing TV service. With this format, we would like to create attention and attract even more people as subscribers to our BBL.tv product.”

Deutsche Telekom holds a four-year deal for the media rights to the Bundesliga. The agreement, which includes both national and international rights, commenced from the 2014-15 season and runs through to the 2017-18 campaign.
