UK public-service broadcaster the BBC has unveiled plans to promote its Match of the Day programme, which provides highlights of football’s English Premier League, via a new initiative on social media platform Facebook.
Each Saturday evening, shortly after the final game of the day, Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker will announce the running order of match highlights in a live broadcast using the social network’s ‘Facebook Mentions’ feature.
Users that ‘like’ the official Match of the Day Facebook page will be able to view the broadcast live and will also have access to behind-the-scenes coverage from the show.
Mark Cole, lead executive for the BBC's football division, said: “Even though Match of the Day is one of the oldest sports shows on television, celebrating our 50th birthday last year, social media plays an important part of our coverage, both in how we integrate into broadcast and how we use it to support the BBC's extensive multi-platform football coverage.”
