UK public-service broadcaster BBC Wales has agreed a two-year deal with the Football Association of Wales for highlights rights to the Welsh national team’s home matches, from 2012-13 to 2013-14.
The deal begins with a friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on August 15, which marks the first time in eight years BBC Wales has broadcast television coverage of the national team.
BBC Wales will then follow the national team’s World Cup qualifying campaign, showing highlights of the home games against Belgium, Scotland, Croatia, Serbia and FYR Macedonia. The first qualifying game to be covered under the new deal will be the home tie against Belgium, on September 7.
The deal complements BBC Wales’ existing radio and online coverage of the national team.
Pay-television broadcaster BSkyB’s four-year deal for the live rights to the Welsh team expired at the end of the 2011-12 season. The association is thought to be close to agreeing a new deal for the live rights.
