Telecommunications companies Vodafone and Orange have agreed carriage deals in Spain for the beIN Sports LaLiga channel.
The deals were reached with the Mediapro agency, which distributes the pay-television channel in the country.
The agreements will run for three seasons, from 2016-17 to 2018-19.
The channel will offer eight matches from the top-tier Liga per match day, with at least 18 Barcelona and Real Madrid games per season being shown. The channel will also offer coverage of the domestic Copa del Rey knockout competition and the Uefa Champions League and Europa League European club tournaments.
Vodafone had asked the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y La Competencia (CNMC), Spain’s competition regulator, to suspend a carriage deal for the channel between rival telco Telefónica and Mediapro.
In April 2015, the CNMC gave the green light to Telefónica’s takeover of Spanish pay-television operator Canal Plus, subject to certain conditions. In January, Telefónica's DTS unit agreed to pay Mediapro €2.4bn ($2.6bn) to carry beIN Sports LaLiga on an exclusive basis for three seasons, from 2016-17 to 2018-19.
However, Vodafone claimed that the exclusive deal contravened a condition imposed by the CNMC when the regulator gave the green light to Telefónica’s takeover of Canal Plus.
