La Liga del Fútbol Profesional Boliviano, the Bolivian football league, is considering launching its own television channel to provide live coverage of its games once its existing domestic rights deal expires.
Bolivian newspaper Los Tiempos said the league was mulling the launch of a channel due to the “modest” value of its existing deal with state-owned telecommunications company Entel. The deal, which began in 2010, was worth $1.3 million (€1 million) in the first year, $1.5 million in 2011, and will be worth more than $2 million this year. TV Sports Markets understands it was originally agreed as a six-year deal, but local media reports say that it can be terminated after this season.
“The idea of creating a Bolivian football channel would not only be about selling the raw material [of football games], but it would be about [offering] a finished product, with news… and the whole spectacle surrounding football,” league president Mauricio Roca Mendez said.
