South African digital entertainment company Discover Digital has made its first sports rights acquisition by agreeing a deal for the SuperGP Champions Trophy national motorcycling series.
Discover Digital struck the deal with GAS Sports, the promoter and rights holder of the event.
The agreement includes streaming, download and electronic sell through rights to the series.
The acquisition is the first sports content deal Discover Digital has agreed ahead of the planned launch of an IPTV service later this year.
Discover Digital plans to launch an over-the-top internet television service in the African market. The service will provide transactional and subscription video-on-demand via local telecommunications networks and internet service providers.
Gary Buskin, an executive at Discover Digital, said: “We have the capability to stream live content, which will open up a whole new market for sports rights holders looking to increase their audience reach beyond the traditional broadcast space. The deal forms part of our strategy to build a strong international and national sports portfolio for our customers.”
