The European Broadcasting Union consortium of free-to-air broadcasters has confirmed an agreement with European football’s governing body Uefa for exclusive media rights on all platforms in 26 countries to the Euro 2016 national team tournament.
The deal, first reported by TV Sports Markets in April, covers: Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, FYR Macedonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland. The agreement in Azerbaijan includes free-to-air rights for 23 games only.
The new contract further strengthens a long-standing relationship between the EBU and Uefa.
The Euro 2016 deal adds to deals for the European Qualifiers and Fifa World Cup. The EBU and its members have media rights for a full four-year national team football cycle from 2014-15 to 2017-18.
EBU president Jean-Paul Philippot said: “This deal provides Uefa with a strong and reliable broadcast commitment from EBU members and reaffirms our ambition and dedication to showcase all major events on public service media.”
Euro 2016 takes place in France next year from June 10 to July 10. The competition has expanded from 16 to 24 teams and from 31 to 51 matches.
