US sports broadcaster ESPN is laying off about 100 employees, according to reports.
ESPN president John Skipper announced in a message to employees on Wednesday that the company is reacting to changing viewing patterns of sports fans, the Reuters news agency reported.
The Associated Press news agency said that the cutbacks include former athletes Trent Dilfer, Len Elmore and Danny Kanell. Several other reporters announced that they would be leaving on social media.
The redundancies represent about 10 per cent of ESPN’s 1,000 on-air staff members.
“Our content strategy – primarily illustrated in recent months by melding distinct, personality-driven SportsCenter TV editions and digital-only efforts with our biggest sub-brand – still needs to go further, faster," Skipper said in the message to staff.
Skipper added that “a limited number of other positions will also be affected and a handful of new jobs will be posted to fill various needs.”
