ESPN strikes rights deal for Sugar Bowl

US sports broadcaster ESPN has acquired rights for the Sugar Bowl US college American football game in a 12-year deal, from 2015 to 2026.

The agreement includes television, radio, mobile, tablet and online rights, and the game will also be available on the WatchESPN service via the Xbox Live games console service.

ESPN has also secured rights to distribute the Sugar Bowl in 3D on its ESPN 3D channel and around the world via ESPN International.

The broadcaster will pay $80 million (€63 million) per year for the rights, according to the ESPN website.

ESPN struck the deal with the Southeastern and Big 12 college sports conferences, which will organise the annual game.

The fixture between the winners of the Southeastern and Big 12 conferences is being introduced as part of a restructuring of the Bowl Championship Series and will take place in New Orleans on January 1 each year.
