International sports broadcaster ESPN will be responsible for providing audiences in the Caribbean with tailored coverage of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro summer Olympic Games, the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (Canoc) has confirmed.
ESPN will carve up the coverage on behalf of Canoc to ensure territories across the Caribbean receive coverage that is focused on the exploits of the region’s athletes at the Games.
ESPN is expected to make available about 200 hours of live Caribbean-focused coverage during the event.
Canoc, comprising the region’s National Olympic Committees and Commonwealth Games Associations, struck a deal for the Games in its first-ever rights deal last November.
Canoc chairman Steve Stoute told the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper: “For too long, member National Olympic Committees have yearned to better control the television coverage at an Olympic Games. For too long, others have benefited from our skills, talents and capabilities, resulting in missed opportunities for us.”
