Social media platform Facebook has renewed a sublicensing agreement with pay-television broadcaster Fox Sports for coverage of the South American Football Confederation’s (Conmebol) Copa Libertadores club competition.
The new agreement covers the 2020 tournament and will deliver Copa Libertadores coverage to Fox Sports customers in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The deal covers matches from the group stage to the quarter-final stage of the competition, with Facebook to retain exclusive rights for the semi-finals and final. The deal will ensure more matches are broadcast on Facebook Watch on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with Fox Sports to provide coverage on Thursdays alongside the social media platform.
Facebook also sublicensed Copa Libertadores coverage to Fox Sports during the 2019 competition.
Facebook has Copa Libertadores rights in Spanish-speaking South American countries until 2022 as part of a four-year deal that began last year. Fox Sports acquired rights to the competition in Brazil and the rest of South America.
The broadcast deals were struck by FC Diez Media, a joint venture between the IMG agency and the DAZN Group. It holds global commercial rights to the Copa Libertadores from 2019 to 2022, in a deal worth a minimum guarantee of $350m (€305.5m) per year.
