The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has said it expects the 2014 World Cup to be broadcast on television in over 80 countries, with negotiations still ongoing for rights deals in additional territories.
The 2014 edition of the national team tournament will take place in the Dutch city of The Hague from May 31 to June 16. With 15 nations being represented amongst the 24 men’s and women’s teams, the event will be broadcast in all five continents. The FIH said it expects the World Cup to reach 368 million viewers through global television, while an expected 1.25 million views are projected for live streaming on video-sharing platform YouTube.
UK pay-television broadcaster BSkyB is set to broadcast all of England’s matches, while pay-television broadcaster Ten Sports will showcase 38 men’s games live throughout India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Malaysian pay-television operator Astro will broadcast 46 games live, while sports broadcaster ESPN’s internet-only network ESPN3 will cover the tournament in the US. Pay-television broadcaster SuperSport is planning broadcast of all 76 games in South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa.
