The Formula E electric motor car series has unveiled the introduction of a helmet camera to its broadcast coverage of races.
The ‘Driver’s Eye’ camera, which is just 8 millimetres in diameter and weight just 2.5 grams, offers a view from the driver’s eye level.
It is attached to the inside of the driver’s helmet, offering live footage from behind the visor in what Formula E has proclaimed as a world’s first in any category of FIA-sanctioned single-seater racing.
The footage was showcased for the first time at last weekend’s Formula E Santiago race.

Aurora Media Worldwide was appointed the host broadcaster of Formula E when the series launched in 2014, with North One Television also coming on board in 2017.
Meanwhile, the Extreme E motor racing championship being developed using electric SUVs, will be broadcaster in Belarus by state broadcaster BTRC in a ‘multi-year’ deal.
The series, which was launched by Formula E founder Alejandro Agag and former racing driver Gil de Ferran, will be shown on BRTC’s free-to-air sports channel Belarus 5.
Pavel Bulatski, head of Belarus 5, said: “Belarus 5 sports channel has always been supportive of the popularisation of not only team sports, but also automotive and technical sports. Different car-related projects, such as Extreme E, Formula E, as well as our own weekly show ‘Pit Stop’, and others, have been warmly accepted and welcomed by our audience.”
The deal adds to existing international exposure already secured by Extreme E in three-year deals with Fox Sports (US, Canada and the Caribbean), Fox Sports Asia (southeast Asia) and Mediaset (Italy).
The five-stage debut season of Extreme E will begin in 2021.
