India’s government has warned broadcasters against advertising gambling products following the rise of what it describes as “online offshore betting platforms” using news websites as a “surrogate product”.

In separate notices to “publishers of news and current affairs content on digital media and publishers of online curated content [OTT platforms]” and “private satellite television channels”, the ministry of information and broadcasting said advertisements for online betting platforms should not be published or broadcast, stating that gambling is illegal in most parts of India and “advertisements of...gambling platforms are also illegal”.
