La ‘U’ to sign multi-million dollar rights deal

Peruvian football club Universitario de Deportes, which plays in the country’s top league, the Copa Movistar Torneo Descentralizado, is reportedly close to agreeing a deal with commercial broadcaster America TV, to begin next season in 2013.

The club currently has a deal with the pay-television channel Movistar TV, owned by Telefónica. Peruvian clubs sell their media rights individually.

Universitario is said to be close to agreeing a deal worth between $2.5 million (€1.9 million) per season and $3 million per season for its broadcast rights.

In 2013, La ‘U’ is expected to generate revenues of about $6 million. In addition to its broadcast rights, the club will earn about $2 million from sponsorship and $1.5 million from ticket sales, according to the website elcomercio.pe
