Member football clubs of the top-tier Super League in Malawi have discussed the possibility of selling media rights for the competition, according to the Daily Times newspaper.
“The clubs want their games to be beamed on television,” the league’s general secretary, Williams Banda, said. “The rights will belong to the league and any club can access them if they partner with any company that has the capacity to secure the rights.”
Banda said that clubs would have to find sponsors that would pay for the rights to be shown on state-owned broadcaster MBC TV, which would then transfer funds back to the league for distribution to its clubs.
“Most clubs do not have marketing strategies. They need to strengthen their marketing capacities and make huge investments so that they could find good partners to secure the rights,” he said. “This will help clubs in raising revenues and beefing up their budgets.”
