The Unidad Editorial media company and the Mediapro agency, which jointly own Marca TV, will close the Spanish digital-terrestrial sports channel on July 31, according to the Libertad Digital website.
Mediapro has met with Marca TV staff to confirm the closure, with 47 of the 63 workers set to be relocated within the agency.
Marca TV first began broadcasting in August 2010. The channel had held the domestic rights for one live free-to-air football match per week from the Spanish Liga until these rights were acquired by commercial broadcaster Mediaset in March. Marca TV’s losses amounted to €6m ($7.8m) at this time.
