The Mediapro agency will continue its trial of 4K technology by broadcasting the title-deciding game of football’s Spanish Liga, Saturday’s clash between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, in the format.
The latest initiative comes after Mediapro chose the Liga game between Real Madrid and Barcelona on March 23 to become the first football match broadcast globally using 4K.
The agency said that although Spanish broadcasters are currently unable to offer 4K signals it will offer the service to international operators. Mediapro will also provide its clients with highlights from the Barcelona-Atlético match in 4K and plans to upload highlights to the La Liga channel on video-sharing platform YouTube.
Mediapro said: “Insertion of this new standard of resolution highlights the commitment of Mediapro to be part of the evolution of digital television and offer the highest image resolution to viewers. A global project to strengthen the quality of Mediapro transmissions will be formed in La Liga next season.”
Mediapro added that Saturday’s game is expected to be televised by more than 50 broadcasters across five continents, providing a potential audience of 500 million viewers.
Barcelona needs to win the match to snatch the title from Atlético, which is currently three points clear of the Catalan club at the top of the table.
