Modern Times Group, the multi-territory commercial and pay-television broadcaster, has struck its latest major football rights deal by reaching agreements for a host of English club competitions in the Nordic markets of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland.
MTG has secured the exclusive Nordic media rights to the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the EFL Championship in long-term deals it says extend well into the next decade.
MTG has extended its exclusive media rights to the FA Cup and season-opening Community Shield in Sweden and Finland to also include Norway from this year and Denmark next year. The rights package will increase from 48 to 80 games as of 2018.
MTG has also extended its exclusive media rights to the EFL Cup and EFL Championship, the second tier of English football, in Sweden and Finland to include Norway and Denmark from the start of the 2017-18 season until the end of the 2021-22 season. The rights package for the EFL Cup knock-out tournament comprises 30 games each season.
Earlier this week, MTG extended its rights to the Uefa Champions League in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The new three-season deal covers Champions League rights from 2018-19 to 2020-21. MTG secured the rights on an exclusive basis in Denmark and Sweden, along with 108 matches per season on an exclusive basis in Norway.
