Newly-formed Indian esports league UCypher has agreed a rights deal with the Indian arm of youth orientated television channel MTV.
UCypher, which is organised by the USports company, will launch next month and has signed an agreement with leading games publisher Valve Corp to use its Counter Strike and DOTA2 titles.
MTV India will air coverage of the new league in a one-hour daily format. Ronnie Screwvala, founder of USports, said his firm has also partnered with video-sharing platform YouTube and esports-focused Twitch to provide additional digital coverage.
“We want to increase the popularity and get more people to watch esports,” Screwvala told Indian newspaper the Economic Times. “If we do a live telecast, it will be difficult to get nongamers. Therefore, we have decided to package it smartly. We know the art of storytelling, which will make for good programming too.”
