The NBC Sports Group division of US media company NBCUniversal has retained exclusive live rights for football’s English Premier League in a six-year deal, from 2016-17 to 2021-22.
According to the New York Times newspaper, the deal is worth about $1bn (€910m) over the six years, about double the value of the existing deal, which is valued at $250m over three years.
The agreement covers all 380 matches per season and includes exclusive rights for Spanish-language coverage of the league in the US.
NBC Sports Group will show coverage via its range of channels, including the NBC network, NBCSN, USA Network, Telemundo and NBC Universo, as well as via the Premier League Extra Time TV package and live on streaming service NBC Sports Live Extra.
The Fox network and the beIN Sports pay-television broadcaster were the only other bidders for the rights, with the tender process having opened on Thursday, the newspaper added. Pay-television sports broadcaster ESPN did not bid because of potential scheduling problems.
