Internet streaming service Netflix is unlikely to bid for English Premier League rights when they become available even though the company is seeking to establish itself in the UK market, according to the company’s product officer David Hunt.
Hunt told the Digital Spy website that the “short lifespan” of sport would not be consistent with Netflix’s core activity of providing subscribers with a library of television and film content via a range of devices. The US-based company launched its service in the UK and Ireland on Monday, January 9.
The Daily Mail newspaper had earlier reported that technology company Apple and internet company Google were considering entering bids for the 2013-14 to 2015-16 Premier League rights in order to boost their content streaming services. The tender is expected to be launched by April.
